2-1/2 pounds ground beef5 medium green peppers, finely chopped4 large onions, chopped (6 cups)1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes in puree1 can (16 ounces) tomato sauce1 can (12 ounces) tomato paste1 cup water2 tablespoons sugar2 tablespoons garlic powder1 tablespoon Italian seasoning1 tablespoon dried oregano2-1/4 teaspoons salt2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce1-1/2 teaspoons pepper1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, optional16 hoagie buns or other sandwich rolls, split
Preparation
In a Dutch oven, cook beef over medium-high heat 8-10 minutes or until no longer pink, breaking into crumbles; drain.
Stir in all remaining ingredients except buns. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, 1 hour or until desired consistency and flavors are blended, stirring occasionally. Serve on buns.
