Ingredients
8 to 10 medium to large apples
3 tbsp. unsalted butter
c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. kosher or sea salt
10 tbsp. butter
c. ice water
1 egg
2 tbsp. turbinado sugar
Preparation
Step 1To make the filling: Adult and Child Peel, core, and segment the apples.Step 2Adult Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples and saute.Step 3Adult and Child Measure the sugar and cinnamon. Add to the apples and mix well. Stir and cook 6 to 10 minutes, or until the apples are softened and browned. Remove from heat and cool. Set aside.Step 4To make the crust and bake: Adult Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C, or gas mark 5).Step 5Child Help measure the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. Mix well. Help cut butter into small pieces and scatter over flour mixture.Step 6Adult and Child Cut the butter into the flour using pastry cutter or your fingertips until you have small pieces.Step 7Adult Add just enough ice water so dough forms into a ball. Chill 30 minutes.Step 8Adult and Child Cut dough into 2 pieces. Put 1 piece back in refrigerator and roll out the other half to about 1 inch (2.5 cm) larger than your pie pan. Place into the pie pan leaving edges ragged.Step 9Adult Roll out the second piece of dough to the same size as the first. Spoon cooled filling into the pie pan. Place the second piece of dough over the filling. Pinch edges together to form an even edge.Step 10Child Cut 3 to 4 tiny diamond-shaped vents in a design on the top.Step 11Adult Beat the egg in a small bowl. Using a pastry brush, brush the egg over the top of the crust. Sprinkle with the turbinado sugar.Step 12Adult Bake in preheated oven about 40 minutes.
